The news is not good.
The number of people seeking assistance in our Haskell Avenue Resource Center continues to climb when compared to the same period last year.
The number of individuals served (that is different people) grew by 16% during the first two months of 2009. The number of different family units served rose by 24%.
During the first two months of this year, we saw the number of individuals interviewed increase by 10% and the number of families touched rise by 21%.
More people coming to us more often for assistance.
The unemployment numbers released last week don't help. Well over 600,000 Americans lost their jobs last month.
The needs will only increase.
We are taking steps to do more to come to the assistance of the growing number of men, women and children who need the very basic necessities of life. Some groundbreaking news will be announced in the near future regarding our plans and new partnerships to make every dollar donated go even further in meeting the needs of the people.

I am sorry to see tough times have come upon us all, rich or poor. I somehow think some of this misery could have been eliminated if however the Dallas Red Light program was eliminated.
I live in a very poor neighborhood and the economy has hit us very hard. A $75 red light ticket here in Dallas is a lot of money if you make less than $7 per hour. Most of the residents in my neighborhood take home less than $250 a week so a $75 red light ticket is between 30 and 35% of their weekly salary, even 50% of their salary for some of them who work just part-time because they are unable to find full time employment.
According to some internet sources many of the city leader make more than $100,000 a year which is about $2,000 a week, and a red light violation would cost them a little less than 4% of their weekly salary by comparison.
There are two options for a red light ticket, either pay the ticket or not pay the ticket. If you choose not to pay the ticket the city of Dallas has decided that fair punishment would be to destroy your credit and this is without a jury trial. The red light ticket is considered a civil matter.
Now for the poor generally minority member they pay the ticket because they don’t want to destroy their opportunity of one day purchasing a new home but if they don’t pay then their dream will be forever shattered by the city of Dallas.
On the other hand the more affluent city resident usually just pays the annoying fine, its just a small percentage of their weekly salary and a bargain over getting caught by a real police officer. It really doesn’t make much of a difference if you are in the $250,000 or over annual income bracket because you can pass red lights without the possibility of ever being held responsibile because after all its just a civil matter and it will never be on your record anyhow, even if your vehicles receives 20 tickets a year. A $75 fine for a person of this income bracket is like going to the dollar store and spending $3 dollars for most of us, who make between $20,000 - $50,000. So for them its just a minor annoyance. Who it really hurts is the poor minority memnber because its a luxury tax to him and to the richest members of our community its a license to pass red lights with immunity. The police officer he won’t have to worry about issuing tickets for red lights because the red light program does it for him now and as a result red light tickets are just a civil matter, and the rich are rewarded.
If you don’t think this is fair you should organize a protest in front of City Hall and contact your council members. Some groups of citizens are holding the brunt of this unfair tax and really red light cameras should be eliminated all together and should not be handled as a civil manner. The vehicle owner is not even able to testify in court about extenuating circumstates, its pay of they destroy your credit.
Another loophole in the law is that there is no picture taken of the driver of the automobile so the city of Dallas is just required to prove that the ticket is sent to the registered owner. You could be a business owner with five employees and not recall who or your employees drove the vehicle the day the ticket wss issued, so who pays, YOU. You could have lent the car to a friend and they argue about the time and place and their willingness to pay, who pays? YOU. Who is responsible? You! You! You!
Please go to City Hall today and tell them this law is unfair!!! Tell them you want the cameras removed!!! Don't let them city punish the poor just because they don't have means. Its not fair! MAKE YOURSELF HEARD!!!!
